Jorge L. Cruz received his Bachelor of Science in Engineering from Florida International University. Upon graduating, Mr. Cruz obtained his license as a professional engineer and developed extensive construction experience particularly in the design of electrical, mechanical, plumbing and fire protection systems. He was involved in the design of large projects for Miami International Airport, Miami Dade County Public Schools, Jackson Memorial Hospital, Baptist Hospital, South Miami Hospital and the Port of Miami.
While working as an engineer, Mr. Cruz attended law school, and in 2001, received his Juris Doctor from the University of Miami. He is admitted to the Florida Bar, the United States District Court, Southern District Court of Florida, and in 2017 was admitted to the Supreme Court of the United States.
Mr. Cruz mainly practices in the areas of design professional liability defense, construction defect litigation, environmental law, surety defense, and construction and product liability related subrogation. He maintains licenses as both a Florida Professional Engineer and Florida Certified General Contractor. Mr. Cruz is a Construction Law Certified Attorney in the State of Florida. In Florida, "Board Certification" in Construction Law by The Florida Bar is the highest level of recognition for competency and experience in the field, requiring specific criteria including practice experience, substantial involvement in construction law, continuing legal education, peer review, and a written examination. Furthermore, Mr. Cruz has experience in environmental pollution at construction sites, environmental due diligence, Brownfield redevelopment, sinkholes, groundwater contamination as well as ground land contamination.
Mr. Cruz maintains active membership in a number of professional associations including the Dade County Bar Association, Cuban American Bar Association, Florida Board of Professional Engineers, Florida Engineering Society, American Institute of Architects (“AIA”), Claims and Litigation Management (CLM)
In 2012, at the AIA chapter's annual convention, he was elected to the AIA Florida Board of Directors, as Member at Large and re-elected in 2013. In 2018 he was voted on to AIA Board of Directors for a two year term. Mr. Cruz in 2012 helped lobby Florida’s Congress Members and assisted in passing the changes to the current Fla. Stat. 558 to include Limits of Liability Bill Fla. Statute 558.0035, that today helps all professional architects and engineers individually limit their liability by adding the 558.0035 clause into their contracts.
Mr. Cruz is also a Certified Litigation Management Professional (CLMP) designation that recognizes his experience in Client Relations, Coverage Perspective, Risk Transfer, Resolution Options, Impact Reporting and Reserving, Legal Budgeting, and Litigations Metrics. He is also an instructor for the CLM School of Construction Claims Collage where he educates claims professional and new attorneys in the field of Construction.
Mr. Cruz is a dynamic and informed speaker, and has appeared before a number of professional design organizations speaking on various legal issues relevant to their profession
